The Village of Richton Park received a grant from the US EPA to perform brownfield assessment and clean-up. Under a US EPA clean up grant, brownfield activities include the physical remediation of on-site contamination.
The grant covers the following activities:
Phase I
Phase I: A Phase I Environmental Site Assessment is a study of environmental records and site history to determine if past uses of the site, as well as past uses of adjoining and surrounding sites, had the potential to negatively impact the soil and/or groundwater on the site. This assessment does not include any physical testing.
Phase II
Phase II: A Phase II Environmental Site Assessment is the physical testing of soil, groundwater, and/or soil vapor, to determine if past uses have negatively impacted the soil and/or groundwater on the site. Samples are collected and set to a laboratory for analysis. Asbestos and other hazardous building materials can also be inspected if buildings are present on the site.
Remediation Planning
Remediation Planning: If contamination is identified through sampling and analysis, remediation planning is used to determine the most cost-efficient method for clean-up.
Site Re-Use Planning
Site Re-Use Planning: Once the site has been fully remediated, site re-use planning will determine the best use for the site for the community and if any precautions need to remain in place.
